20. Georgius Kozak, born April 11, 1797 in Nizna Mysla, Slovakia¹; died July 26, 1871 in Nizna Mysla, Slovakia². He was the son of 40. Michael Kozak and 41. Barbara Radacsovszki. He married (1) 21. Maria Orosz Abt. 1823.

Notes for Georgius Kozak:
In the Nizna Mysla parish records, the pastor wrote, "The father of Jan Kozak, Juraj [=Georgius/George] married Maria Orosz and moved into her house and lived there. For that reason, his family nickname is Orosz." According to Dr. Duncan Gardiner, certified genealogist, such a remark in a parish register is very unusual. Dr. Gardiner also explained that the use of a family nickname as a second surname was done in villages to uniquely identify an extended family which had a relatively common name. I have seen the last name written as both Orosz Kozak and Kozak Orosz, possibly depending on whether the writer was adhering to Hungarian or Slovak conventions. I believe the Hungarians would list it as Orosz Kozak, the Slovaks as Kozak Orosz, but that is speculation.
Georgius Kozak's death record lists his place of birth as Zsadany (present-day Zdana). There are a lot of Kozaks in those records.

Notes for Maria Orosz:
The marriage record of George Kozak and Maria Orosz was not found in the Nizna Mysla parish records. Duncan Gardiner searched the years 1806-1824. Two women named Mária Orosz were born during the likely period: 1) on 20 March 1795, Maria, daughter of Andreas Orosz and Catharina, godparents Joannes Belyuss and Susanna Dalyak (p. 59); and 2) 29 March 1805, Mária, daughter of of Michael Orosz and Catharina, godparents Joannes Melaga and Anna Koleszar (p. 86). Until I can research all the records from the Nizna Mysla area, I am assuming that the Maria born in 1805 is the correct one, as it was common practice for a man to marry someone younger than himself. Duncan Gardiner feels that there is insufficient evidence to point to either one.
Please note: her religion is given as Greek Catholic, so her birth record will not be with the Roman Catholic records.

2. Georgius Kozak, born February 27, 1827 in Nizna Mysla, Slovakia⁵; died August 23, 1874 in Nizna Mysla, Slovakia⁶; married Maria Bogus November 27, 1848 in Nizna Mysla, Slovakia.

   Marriage Notes for Georgius Kozak and Maria Bogus:
   Georgius Orosz Kozak and Maris Bogus were married the same day as his brother Janos Orosz Kozak, who married Elisabetha Scziranka. On the marriage record it says that Gyorgy Orosz, aka Kozak, 22, married Maria Bogus, 17.

3. Maria Kozak, born November 29, 1829 in Nizna Mysla, Slovakia⁷.
4. Anna Kozak, born May 25, 1834 in Nizna Mysla, Slovakia⁸; died February 7, 1838 in Nizna Mysla, Slovakia⁹.
5. Notes for Anna Kozak:
   A cross next to Anna's name means that she died, but the priest made no notation to that effect anywhere.
6. Josephus Kozak, born March 7, 1839 in Nizna Mysla, Slovakia¹⁰; died Bef. 1886; married Anna Varga August 18, 1867 in Nizna Mysla, Slovakia¹¹.
